Prayer Guidelines

Prayers After An Election

Note: These notes are prepared with a General Election in mind, but the same principles can also be applied to a referendum, a council election or any other election.

An election can be a very dramatic affair.  The time immediately following is full of anticipation and anxiety for those who have stood for election.  Party leaders have to wait with confidence or anxiety or trepidation or all three for the final result!  Until the final vote is counted and the results declared everyone has an opinion!  The media will have a voice with newscasters taking part, with interviews of candidates, party leaders and other strategic personnel.  Announcements are made from Party Headquarters and forecasts come from a variety of sources.  The nation seems to hold its collective breath until the final announcement is made.
Election Count - C:Coventry County Council
The Counting of Votes.
As ballot boxes are collected and brought to a central point in each constituency where the votes are counted.

Let us pray that

•    there will be complete security

•    all postal votes come in on time

•    there is no manipulation of votes

•    no mistakes are made in the counting of votes

•    the results are beyond question
The Announcement of Results
There will be some candidates who will be disappointed that they did not win in their constituency.  Some seats considered 'safe' will be lost.  There will be surprise results.   A Party that previously held a majority may unexpectedly find they have become a minority party.  'Spin Doctors' will be putting a positive 'spin' on the election results whatever they may be and even in the worst case scenario.

The Individual Candidates.
We must not lose sight of the fact that in each constituency there is only one winner.

It would be wonderful if these words were the benchmark for an appointee -
Acts 6:3 -
Therefore, brethren, seek out from among you seven men of good reputation, full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business.

Undoubtedly, we can pray that every appointee will be men or women of good reputation, wise and of a good understanding.

Proverbs 24:17 - Do not rejoice when your enemy (or opponent) falls, And do not let your heart be glad when he stumbles.

Let us pray that -

•    the winning candidate will be gracious

•    that in the middle of their celebrations they will be aware of the responsibility of their new or regained position.

•    they will settle into their position of representation swiftly and with a minimum of adjustment.

•    losing candidates will not be overwhelmed with a sense of defeat

•    they will take valuable lessons from the experience through which they have just come.

The Prime Minister
When it is one party that has an obvious majority of more than 50% there will be celebrations, and much excitement.  In the middle of this the leader of that party will begin to consider his position as the incoming or returning Prime Minister.

Psalms 62:11 - God has spoken once, Twice I have heard this: That power belongs to God.

Proverbs 29:2 - When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice.

Proverbs 4:5-7 - Get wisdom! Get understanding! Do not forget, nor turn away from the words of my mouth.  Do not forsake her, and she will preserve you; love her, and she will keep you.  Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom. and in all your getting, get understanding.

Let us pray that -
•    as the leader of the winning party receives his/her appointment from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth 11 that the working relationship between Monarch and Prime Minister will be beneficial to the nation.

•    as the leader of that party that he/she will assume their position with grace.

•    they will exercise much wisdom and authority in the appointment of Cabinet Ministers.

•    the appointees will be suitable and able for the tasks even if inexperienced.

•    the positions are not given only as rewards or favours.

•    any who expected an appointment and were not allocated a position will not allow themselves to be affected by the Prime Minister's decision.
